It’s normal to want it all: good pay and the time to be there for your family. Most people assume the two pull in opposite directions. More pay means more hours, and cutting sleep instead only wears your health down. That is burning the candle at both ends.
Lewis Tan, who ran his own logistics business, says he found a different route: learning to read candlestick charts and trade foreign currencies, known as forex.
Why Did Lewis Make The Change?
Lewis says it wasn’t only about returns or free time. He wanted a regular income for retirement that would not depend on him working actively.
He tried stocks, commodities and options first, but says their trading hours clashed with his business, which he wanted to keep running in case trading did not work out. Forex markets trade around the clock on weekdays, which he says made it easier to fit around work.
A Rocky Start
Like many beginners, Lewis taught himself online. He says he read everything he could find, convinced he could work it out alone. It went badly. He says he wiped out his trading account within a month, and the mix of conflicting sources left him confused and discouraged.
That’s when he found Actions to Wealth, the forex trading community that runs this webclass.
His Turning Point
The community offered a free webclass. Lewis says he was sceptical, but signed up after reading student stories, including some from people who say they now trade full time or have become trainers.
According to Lewis and the organisers, the class covers:
- Trading when prices fall. How short selling a currency works, so a trade can aim to gain when a price drops as well as when it rises, and loses if the price moves the other way.
- About 30 minutes a day. Lewis says he trades after work and dinner, or on his commute.
- A “wave-rider” strategy that the organisers describe as simple enough for beginners.
What Lewis Says Was Different From Learning Alone
- Strategies for different schedules. Traders in the community’s international network, which Lewis says reaches as far as El Salvador and New Zealand, share the systems they use in their own time zones.
- Tested techniques. The organisers say their techniques were back-tested over hundreds of trades in different market conditions. Back-tested results are not live results and do not predict future ones.
- Personal feedback. Trainers who, he says, have more than a decade of professional trading experience pointed out his weaknesses.
- Community tools. Indicator templates built by the community, which he says simplify his analysis.
- Help when stuck. A community to ask, with regular sessions on new market developments.
Lewis puts the community’s risk management approach at the top of his list. No method removes the risk of loss, so ask exactly how any approach limits losses before you trade with real money.
How Lewis Describes His Results
Lewis says he now also trades oil, gold and stocks. In Lewis’s experience, trading covers a few hundred dollars a day of his expenses and hobbies. He estimates he makes an average of 6% to 8% regularly, with some good months reaching 30% to 40%.
We have not checked these figures. They are Lewis’s own estimates, not a typical or expected result, and returns like these come with large risks.
With this extra income, he says he has stepped back from work and spends more time gardening, cooking and watching K-dramas with his wife.
Gaining A New Family Along The Way
Lewis says his family has got used to having him at home more. The catch is waiting for his daughter to get time off work so they can travel together.
In the meantime, he helps out at the community’s programmes and says he still picks up new tips from the trainers. He says he values how close the traders and trainers are.
Lewis ended our interview saying his daughter asks what he is doing when he trades, and that he hopes she might come to enjoy it one day.
