Quick Answer

Match how you pay to how often you park. At an HDB surface car park outside the Central Area, parking from 7pm to 7am costs S$9.20 a night per use, or S$184 over 20 weeknights. Tier 1 season parking there is S$80 a month, so it is cheaper from the 9th night.

The Useful Number: Parking from 7pm to 7am costs S$9.20 a weeknight per use, or S$184 over 20 weeknights. Tier 1 surface season parking is S$80 a month, so it is cheaper from the 9th night.

How Does Season Parking Work, And What Does It Cost?

If you park in the same place most days, a season ticket is usually the biggest saving available. You pay a monthly fee and park at one car park as often as you like. HDB sells it by calendar month.

HDB charges in two tiers. Tier 1 is for a household’s first car, registered to someone living in the precinct the car park serves. Tier 2 covers further cars and non-residents. Tier 1 is S$80 a month at a surface car park and S$110 at a sheltered one, such as a multi-storey car park, except in special precincts. Tier 2 starts at S$90 and S$120, and is higher in restricted zones and designated areas.

URA sells Residential tickets for the first car of nearby residents and Others tickets for people working nearby or extra cars. Check the rate at the car park you use.

When Does Season Parking Beat Paying Per Use?

Outside the Central Area, HDB short-term parking costs S$0.60 per half-hour. At car parks with the Night Parking Scheme, parking from 10.30pm to 7am is capped at S$5.

Say you park near home from 7pm to 7am on weeknights. The evening costs S$4.20 (seven half-hours at S$0.60) and the night S$5, so each night is S$9.20. Twenty weeknights cost S$184: S$84 of evenings and S$100 of nights. Tier 1 surface season parking is S$80, so it would save you S$104 that month.

Eight nights cost S$73.60 and nine cost S$82.80, so season parking is cheaper from the 9th night. At a sheltered car park (S$110) it takes 12 nights: 11 cost S$101.20 and 12 cost S$110.40. If you only park after 10.30pm, S$80 buys 16 nights at S$5, so season parking wins from the 17th.

Visiting family often? HDB’s Family Season Parking costs half the Tier 1 rate, S$40 a month at a surface car park, near a parent’s, child’s, sibling’s, grandparent’s or in-law’s flat. You need valid HDB season parking for your own flat first. A three-hour evening visit costs S$3.60, so it pays off from the 12th visit in a month.

Which Hours Are Free Or Capped?

Under HDB’s Free Parking Scheme, most HDB car parks are free from 7am to 10.30pm on Sundays and public holidays. Look for the orange sign plate at the entrance. Lots reserved for season holders, marked with red or red-and-white lines, are excluded.

Electronic (gantry) car parks charge by the minute, and you pay nothing if you leave within 15 minutes. Day parking is capped at S$12 outside the Central Area and S$20 inside it, and the same caps apply to a full 7am-to-7am day at Night Parking Scheme car parks. The caps do not apply at car parks with peak-hour charges, where the rate outside the Central Area rises to S$0.80 per half-hour at busy times.

At coupon car parks, pay with paper coupons or the Parking.sg app. The app lets you extend from your phone, refunds unused time when you end a session early, and caps a full day at one car park. Unused or expired coupons can be refunded at HDB branch offices or the URA Centre.

Where Else Can You Park For Less?

Location matters most. HDB car parks in the Central Area charge S$1.20 per half-hour from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, double the rate elsewhere. The official Park and Ride scheme ended on 1 December 2016, but parking outside the Central Area and taking the MRT in still halves the daytime rate.

Mall parking promotions, such as free hours with a minimum spend, change often. Count one only if you would spend that money anyway.

When Is Public Transport Cheaper Than Driving?

Say you drive to work on 20 weekdays and park from 8am to 6pm at a Central Area HDB car park without peak-hour charges. Each day hits the S$20 cap, so parking alone costs S$480 a month: S$400 at work and S$80 for season parking near home. An Adult Monthly Travel Pass costs S$122 for unlimited basic bus and train rides, and its price is unchanged in the fare review taking effect on 26 December 2026.

Parking is only part of a car’s running cost. The Subscription Audit adds up repeat charges such as a season ticket, and the Monthly Savings Split helps you decide where a saving goes.

What Should You Check Before You Pay For Parking?

  1. Count how many days and nights you parked at the same car park last month.
  2. Multiply by your per-use cost and compare it with that car park’s season rate.
  3. If you visit family often, compare Family Season Parking.
  4. Use free Sunday and public holiday hours at car parks with the orange sign.
  5. For quick drop-offs at gantry car parks, leave within 15 minutes.
  6. End Parking.sg sessions when you drive off so unused time is refunded.
  7. Pick a standard-rate car park over a nearby peak-hour one.
  8. Price a month of bus and train rides before renewing a car park near work.
