Quick Answer

Add the cash you need for all three goals and subtract savings already set aside. Then check when each bill falls due. Expected ang bao is uncertain and may arrive after deposits are due.

The Useful Number: The example needs S$4,723 a month to pay bills before gifts arrive. At S$3,000 a month, the biggest cash gap is S$31,000.

What Counts As The Cash Side Of Each Goal?

A wedding, renovation and BTO flat all draw on the same savings. Start with the cash you expect to pay for each, then subtract savings already set aside.

The BTO entry is the cash you expect to pay, not the full flat price; work out the part paid by CPF separately. Do not count a payment in both the BTO and renovation figures, or count your emergency fund as money to spend.

How Much Do You Need To Save Over 18 Months?

Take a S$45,000 wedding, S$20,000 of expected ang bao, a S$50,000 renovation and S$30,000 of BTO cash payments, with S$40,000 already saved and 18 months to go. These are made-up budgets, not typical market prices. The three goals come to S$105,000, so S$65,000 is still to save.

BTO cash is due in month 6. Renovation and wedding bills fall in month 18, before gifts arrive. Paying the S$85,000 due before gifts (S$125,000 − S$40,000 saved) takes S$4,723 a month: S$85,000 ÷ 18, rounded up. At S$3,000 a month you have S$94,000, so you need S$31,000 more cash before gifts and end S$11,000 short after them.

Why S$94,000 Falls Short Of S$125,000The worked example. All S$125,000 of bills fall due by month 18, before S$20,000 of expected ang bao arrives. Savings by then reach S$94,000, so S$31,000 more cash is needed first.

Can An End-Date Total Hide An Earlier Shortfall?

Enter the month of each payment: the wedding deposit and wedding, an optional renovation deposit and the balance, the BTO payment and expected gifts. The payment-date check shows balances before and after gifts. It is not a full contractor or HDB instalment schedule. A bill due in three months cannot be paid with money you save next year.

Expected ang bao is uncertain and may arrive after deposits are due. With no ang bao the total becomes S$125,000, but the S$4,723 target stays the same because every bill is already paid before gifts. Plan to pay the gross bill before gifts arrive.

How Do You Turn The Total Into A Payment Calendar?

List each deposit and balance payment by date from real contracts or quotes. Compare the cash you will have with the bills due so far, and add a buffer.

The planner assumes no interest or price rises. Check the target against your monthly budget; if it squeezes essentials, cut the scope or extend the timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Do A Wedding, Renovation And BTO Cost Together?

In the guide’s made-up example, a S$45,000 wedding less S$20,000 of expected ang bao, a S$50,000 renovation and S$30,000 of BTO cash payments total S$105,000.

With S$40,000 already saved, S$65,000 is left to save. These are example budgets, not typical market prices.

Why Can We Run Short Even If Our Total Savings Are Enough?

A total at the end date can hide an earlier shortfall.

A bill due in three months cannot be paid with money you save next year. In the example, you end S$11,000 short after gifts. But before gifts, you need S$31,000 more cash.

Do We Include The Full BTO Flat Price?

No.

The BTO entry is the cash you expect to pay, not the full flat price. Work out the part paid by CPF separately. Do not count a payment in both the BTO and renovation figures, or count your emergency fund as money to spend.

How Should We Treat Expected Ang Bao?

With care, because it is uncertain and may arrive after wedding deposits are due.

With no ang bao, the example total rises to S$125,000. The S$4,723 monthly target stays the same, because it already covers the S$85,000 of bills due before gifts. Keep a separate plan to pay the full bill before gifts arrive.
